These are difficult days for us in the Lakes. We have friends, colleagues and neighbours whose homes have been flooded and lives shattered, Many businesses have been desperately damaged. We have wonderful emergency services and voluntary agencies, and we have to try and look ahead. There are some astonishing displays of positivity; look at the village shop owners in the devastated village of Braithwaite stating loudly "WE will be back".
We need the rest of Britain to take notice, to realise that the Lake District is much more than just a jolly holiday destination; that people live their lives here and run their businesses here. We need to back the superb appeal which was set up by the Cumbria Community Foundation even while the rain was still falling. And we need to find creative ways to get our businesses back on track and prove that the Lakes can win through.
